Do You Get Paid to Homeschool? What Exists and What Doesn't
The straight answer: no government pays parents a salary to homeschool their own children. But a growing patchwork of programmes will fund homeschool expenses, sometimes generously, and the difference between the two is worth understanding before you plan around either.
What does not exist
There is no federal homeschool payment, no salary for teaching your own child, and no general tax deduction for homeschool expenses on a federal return. Posts promising otherwise are usually selling something. What does exist: ESAs
Education Savings Accounts are the big story. A growing list of states, Arizona and Florida the best known among them, put public money into an account a family spends on approved education expenses: curriculum, tutoring, online courses, therapies, sometimes activity fees. Amounts commonly run several thousand dollars per child per year. The money reimburses expenses rather than paying you, and every programme runs on documentation: approved categories, receipts, and records that survive review. Eligibility and rules change often enough that your state’s current programme page is the only source worth trusting.
Charter and public programme stipends
In some states, notably California, families can enrol in a charter school’s independent study programme and receive instructional funds, often $1,000 to $3,000 a year, spent through approved vendors. The trade is real: you are legally a public school family, with a supervising teacher, work samples, and state testing. Many families find the trade fair; others value full independence more than the funds. Both are reasonable positions, and knowing the trade exists is the point.
Children with additional needs

Several ESA programmes began as special-needs programmes and offer higher amounts for children with documented needs, covering therapies alongside academics.
