How to Make a Homeschool High School Transcript
A homeschool transcript sounds official and intimidating. It is actually one or two pages: courses, grades, credits, a GPA, and your signature. Colleges accept parent-issued transcripts every admissions cycle, from state universities to the most selective schools. Here is how to build one properly.
What belongs on the page
- Student’s name and date of birth, plus your homeschool’s name and address
- Each course taken in grades 9 to 12, with the grade earned
- Credits per course, and total credits
- GPA, with the scale you used stated plainly
- Graduation date, actual or expected, and a parent signature
Assigning credits
The working convention: a full-year course is 1 credit, roughly 120 to 180 hours of work, and a semester course is 0.5. Textbook-based courses can simply follow the book: finishing a standard high school biology text is a credit. For interest-led or self-designed courses, log the hours. Colleges generally expect somewhere around 24 credits across four years, with the core subjects represented each year.
Calculating GPA
Convert each grade to points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0), multiply by the course’s credits, sum those quality points, and divide by total credits. If you weight honours or AP courses, say so on the transcript and show the scale. Consistency and transparency matter far more than which scale you choose.
Two accepted layouts
Group courses by year, freshman through senior, or by subject, with all math together and all science together. Admissions offices read both daily. Choose whichever tells your student’s story more clearly; by subject often flatters a student whose coursework did not follow a traditional sequence.
What colleges are really checking
Not the font. They want internal consistency: credits that add up, a stated GPA scale, grades that align with test scores and essays, and course titles that mean something.
