Free homeschool GPA calculator

Enter the courses, credits and final grades. The GPA is credit-weighted on the 4.0 scale a transcript uses, and it updates as you type. No email needed for the number. Add honors or college level courses and you get a weighted GPA too, with the weighting written down rather than assumed.

The student and the year

A, B, C. The usual way a transcript records a year.

The courses

One line per course, with the credit value and the final grade. A full year course is usually 1 credit and a semester course 0.5. Mark anything taught at honors or college level, since that is what a weighted GPA is built from.

Credit-weighted, which is not the same as an average

An A in a one credit elective and a C in a three credit science do not average to a B. The science counts three times as much, because a GPA weights every grade by the credit behind it. This is the single most common mistake in a hand-worked GPA, and it always flatters the result, which is why nobody notices it until somebody else recalculates.

A failed course still counts in the average. It just earns no credit. Those are two different things, and a real transcript does the first and not the second.

Why we ask you to set the weighting

Because there is no national standard, and any tool that shows you a weighted GPA without telling you its convention has invented an authority it does not have. Some schools add a full point for AP and half for honors. Some add less. Some weight nothing at all, and some cap the result at 4.0. All of those are normal.

So the bumps are yours to set, the defaults are the most common convention rather than a rule, and whatever you choose is printed on the summary sheet in a sentence. A reader who disagrees can then see exactly what to change. That is the most a free calculator can honestly offer, and it is more than most of them do.

Worth knowing either way: most colleges recalculate GPA themselves from the course list, on their own scale, often counting only academic subjects. The course list and the unweighted number are what travel. The weighted number is mostly for your own sense of where things stand.

Mastery and narrative grades have no GPA

Deliberately not offered here. Reducing “secure” and “working towards” to a decimal invents precision that was never in the record, and a calculator that accepted it and returned nothing would just look broken. If you grade that way and need a document, the transcript generator carries the narrative instead, which is the honest form for it.

A GPA is not a document

It is one line on one. What an admissions office reads is the transcript: the courses, the credits, the grades and the years, with the GPA at the bottom. The sheet this produces is a working summary for your own file, not something to send anywhere on its own. When you need the real thing, our transcript generator is free too, and our guide to homeschool transcripts covers what belongs on one.

What we do with your email

Nothing at all unless you download the summary sheet: the GPA itself is free and ungated. If you do download it, we send you the sheet and occasional homeschool advice, and you can unsubscribe in one click. The course names and grades you type are used to render your PDF and are not stored on our servers. See our privacy policy for the full detail.

Recalculating this every time a grade lands is the part that gets old, and doing it once at the end means trusting four years of memory. Bowerstead keeps courses, credits and grades as they happen and works the GPA out continuously. Free for 30 days, then $9 a month or $79 a year.

It changes every term

A GPA is only current until the next grade lands, and retyping four years of courses to find out where you stand is the part families give up on. Bowerstead keeps it live.
